SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is defined by Wikipedia as the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic“) search results for targeted keywords.
My definition of it? Making search engines think you are important enough to belong on the first few pages for your specified keywords. There are a combination of aspects which influence search engines to index and rank your site (amount of backlinks, content, on-page optimization factors such as alt image tags and keyword placement, etc.).
For a beginner’s guide to SEO I highly recommend the SEO Book by Aaron Walls, the site has a lot of useful training seminars and beginner’s information. Bruce Clay, whose company does about $5 million annually in online marketing also has a good intro.
I work with Baltimore/DC/Virginia area small businesses and individuals at a very competitive rate through BizPro Solutions as well, and offer free initial SEO consultations based on your site and keywords.
