Is Google not happy about the Dofollow revolution?

By murph

Dofollow

Okay so a lot of blogs have decided to add dofollow plugins to allow visitors to express their opinion and actually get a link out of it. I decided to be one of them and even advertise my blog as a dofollow resource for links by listing on dofollow directories, and guess what happened 3 days after I did? My pagerank dropped from 3 to 2.

Take a look at this dofollow blog directory and see how many of these sites have lower pageranks than what is listed. Coincidence? Me thinks not. Is Google really penalizing sites for coming out of the closet as dofollow??

    Hi Murph,

I wouldn’t be surprised if Google penalized dofollow blogs - I would be disappointed, but not surprised.

I find it hard to believe your blog would drop in PR just 3 days after becoming dofollow. Do you think this may have had to do with the latest Google PR update and not really related to you going dofollow?

How do you think they would identify dofollow blogs?

I guess we dofollowers will have to keep and eye on this. To me, the jury is still out on this.

I’m not 100% sure either, and I agree it wouldn’t be surprising. But isn’t it weird that almost all of the sites you see listed on these Dofollow directories, with a few being the exception, having lower PR’s than before they were listed?

    Sup Murph,

I’d be surprised if this was the case because it does seem a little childish, even for Google.

I did notice that quite a few blogs dropped in PR across the board.

3 days is really fast.. sounds like a manual change. But that doesn’t seem right, because with paid links, Google was just dropping toolbar pagerank to 0.

Rob and Mike, doesn’t it seem weird though that almost all of them dropped one point?

I say coincidence… I think it was just that you happened to sign up for that right when they made a PR update. Lots of sites fell 1 point… lots of sites with no reason for a penalty.

I’m happy to say that my sites did not suffer from the recent google pr update. However, it didn’t benefit either :)

Could it be possible that google penalizes sites which contain certain type of html code (like the one used for commentluv badges) ?

It shouldn’t be hard for google to pick out the sites (blogs) using commentluv using this method and penalizing them with a lower PR or SE rankings.

However, my site did not suffer a PR correction (neither way)
